A writ should be considered where a public authority has violated a fundamental or legal right, acted without jurisdiction, ignored a mandatory duty, denied fair procedure, made an unlawful appointment, detained someone unlawfully, or where an important public-interest constitutional/legal issue requires judicial determination.
Ordinary appeals should be considered first where they provide an adequate and effective remedy.
