What should a writ petition contain?

A writ petition should identify:

  • the petitioner;
  • respondents;
  • relevant facts;
  • constitutional or legal right involved;
  • challenged decision or omission;
  • jurisdiction;
  • grounds of illegality;
  • alternative remedies and why they are inadequate where relevant;
  • relief requested;
  • supporting documents.

Public-interest petitions require additional information under the Supreme Court Rules.
