Under section 70 of the National Civil Code, a marriage generally requires both parties to consent to accept each other as husband and wife, not to be within a prohibited relationship, not to have an existing marital relationship, and to have completed 20 years of age.
Customary exceptions can apply to certain relationships that would otherwise fall within prohibited degrees where the relevant community or clan custom lawfully permits marriage.
