The Civil Code requires spouses to register their marriage before the legally designated authority. However, section 76 also states that a marriage predating the Code is not treated as legally invalid merely because it was not registered.
Registration remains important evidence of marital status and is useful for immigration, succession, citizenship-related processes, banking, property and other official matters.
