A proposed company name is submitted electronically to OCR through CAMIS. The name must satisfy the Companies Act and should be sufficiently distinct from existing registered companies and protected trademarks.
Before applying
Applicants should:
- search existing company names;
- avoid names that closely resemble an existing company;
- consider possible trademark conflicts;
- ensure the name is compatible with the proposed objectives;
- avoid unlawful, misleading or inappropriate wording.
Name reservation and registration
OCR's published CAMIS registration manual states that, after name reservation is approved, the company-registration process should be completed within 90 days of approval; otherwise another user may be able to reserve and register the same name.
Because CAMIS procedures can be updated, the live system should be checked before relying on a procedural deadline.
